Who We Are

Program Administrator

Susan Boehm-Donlon

Teacher for the Deaf

Sue Longo: Sue has been involved as a parent with the program since 1997. Her family moved to St. Augustine so her son could attend the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind. In August 2003 she joined the staff with the goal of continuing the program. She says being a member of the staff has been a great learning experience. Her favorite aspect of the job is preparing students for their sacraments.

Teacher for the Deaf

Raul Maldonado has been with the program since 2003. He has done an outstanding job assisting Sue Longo with teaching classes for the deaf students. He has been a wonderful role model for the students and is very involved in the local deaf community.

Program History

The Catholic Deaf and Blind Ministry at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind in St. Augustine, Florida officially started in 1980 under the direction of Fr. Rene Robert and the Diocese of St. Augustine. Prior to that date, the ministry was strictly a volunteer ministry under Sr. Rita Baum, SSJ and volunteers from the Cathedral Basilica Parish. The volunteer ministry had been operating from the late 1940's.

Today's Program

For thirty-four continuous years the Catholic Religious Education Program has served the Catholic students with sensory impairments from all over the state of Florida, from PreK through post-grad. We offer a nourishing environment for our students to learn about their Catholic faith and provide social opportunities as well.

Among our opportunities for a well rounded Catholic experience:

  • Regular weekly classes
  • Special sacrament preparation
  • Group field trips
  • Opportunities for retreats for the older students
  • A connection with the wider Catholic deaf or blind communities

Sacramental Preparation

Preparation for the sacraments of the Catholic Church is a big part of our work here at the Catholic Religious Education Program. We are responsible to the diocese, who in turn is responsible to the magisterium. We take our obligation seriously.

We need to keep very accurate and detailed records for the diocese. Please help us! We ask for your child's Baptismal Certificate. If you don't have one, tell us which church your child was baptised in, and we will get a copy of the certificate for you.

We have some other strict rules too.

  • Your child must attend weekly religion class.
  • Your child may have flexible classwork or individual instruction.
  • You must provide baptismal information.
